Waggl Privacy Policy

Effective date: May 2, 2026 · Last updated: May 14, 2026

1. Who we are

Waggl is a voice-first iOS app for beekeepers, operated by S3 Innovations LLC (the “Operator,” “we,” “us”). You can reach us at jsilverman@s3-innovations.com.

If you have questions about this policy or about how your data is handled, that email is the right place to start.

2. What this policy covers

This policy describes the personal information we collect when you use Waggl, how we use it, who we share it with, and the choices you have. It applies to the Waggl iOS app and any associated services we operate.

3. Information we collect

3.1 Account information

When you create an account, we collect:

3.2 Beekeeping data you create

The core purpose of Waggl is to help you record what’s happening in your hives. When you use the app, we store:

3.3 Voice recognition

Waggl uses your iPhone’s built-in speech recognition (provided by Apple) to detect wake phrases and commands while you’re inspecting. This processing happens on Apple’s infrastructure under Apple’s privacy terms. We do not store the partial transcripts of your environment captured by the wake-word detector — only the audio you explicitly record during an inspection is uploaded.

3.4 Location data

We collect the GPS coordinates of an apiary only when you explicitly tap “Use current location” or enter coordinates manually for an apiary. We do not track your real-time location.

3.5 Device and usage information

We do not currently collect general device telemetry, IP-address-based analytics, or behavioral tracking data. If we add crash reporting (such as Sentry), this policy will be updated to describe what crash reports include.

3.6 Information from other users

If you accept an invitation to a shared apiary, the inviting beekeeper sees your display name and email so that they can identify you on the membership list. Inspections you record stay attributed to you.

3.7 Ask Waggl AI assistant

When you use the in-app Ask Waggl assistant, we send your question, recent thread history, and a context bundle to Anthropic’s Claude API. The context bundle includes a snapshot of your hives, recent inspection summaries, active treatments, equipment inventory, and the regional context described in section 3.8 — enough for the assistant to give grounded answers about your operation.

We log per-user daily question counts (in ai_chat_usage) to enforce reasonable usage caps. We do not log the question text or the assistant’s reply server-side.

3.8 Anonymized regional aggregates

Waggl helps each beekeeper see what’s happening in their region by aggregating anonymized data from other Waggl users in the same state. Sharing is on by default, and you can opt out at any time.

What’s shared: state-level rollups computed nightly — the average mites-per-100 across opted-in apiaries in your state, the percentage currently in active treatment, and the percentage above the Honey Bee Health Coalition treatment threshold (3 mites/100). Privacy floor: a state’s metrics are only visible to other users once at least 5 opted-in apiaries are in the bucket.

What’s NOT shared: account info, email, display name, individual hive names, queen names, inspection notes, audio recordings, photos, exact GPS coordinates, county- or city-level location, treatment products, or anything else that could identify you or a specific apiary.

Two layers of opt-out:

The example apiary that comes pre-seeded with new accounts has sharing turned off by default, since its data is fictional.

4. How we use your information

We use what we collect to:

5. Who we share your information with

We share data with the following service providers, only to the minimum extent needed to operate the app:

We do not:

6. Data retention

We retain your data for as long as your account is active. When you delete your account (see section 7), we delete or anonymize your personal data within 30 days, except where we’re required to retain something for legal or accounting reasons.

7. Your choices and rights

You can:

If you live in a jurisdiction with additional privacy rights (such as the EU, UK, California, or other US states with comprehensive privacy laws), you also have the right to access, correct, port, or delete your data, and to lodge a complaint with your local data protection authority. To exercise any of these rights, email jsilverman@s3-innovations.com.

8. Security

We use industry-standard practices to protect your data, including:

No system is perfectly secure. If we discover a security incident that affects your data, we’ll notify you in accordance with applicable law.

9. Children’s privacy

Waggl is not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect data from children under 13. If you believe we have, contact us and we’ll delete it.

10. Changes to this policy

If we materially change this policy, we’ll notify you in the app and update the “Last updated” date at the top. Continued use of the app after changes take effect means you accept the updated policy.
